A Practical Customs Checklist for UK-to-Africa Shipments
Customs paperwork stops more Africa-bound parcels than bad weather. Use this checklist before you pack, and let JED handle documentation as part of your shipment.

Customs is where informal shipping falls apart. A parcel held at destination because of missing declarations costs more in time and stress than getting paperwork right at the start.
JED Logistics handles customs documentation as part of our International Express service. This checklist helps you prepare before collection so nothing surprises you at the border.
Before you pack
Describe every item accurately. Vague labels like "gifts" or "personal items" cause delays. List contents, quantities, and approximate values in plain language.
Check restricted and prohibited goods. Rules differ by destination country. Batteries, liquids, foodstuffs, medications, and certain electronics may need special handling or may not be permitted at all. Contact us if you are unsure.
Keep commercial and personal shipments clear. Business samples need different declarations than a family care package. Tell us which applies when you request a quote.
Retain proof of purchase where relevant. Receipts support declared values if customs asks for verification.
Documents we typically need
For most personal and commercial express parcels from the UK to Nigeria, Ghana, or Cameroon, we prepare:
- Commercial or pro-forma invoice (depending on shipment type)
- Packing list matching actual contents
- Recipient name, phone number, and full delivery address
- Sender identification and UK return address
Our team reviews documentation before dispatch from the UK hub, not after a hold notice arrives abroad.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Under-declaring value to save duty (can result in seizure or return)
- Mixed undeclared items hidden inside declared goods
- Incomplete recipient details (missing phone numbers are a frequent last-mile blocker)
- Using the wrong service for cargo weight or dimensions (quote the correct service upfront)
Compliance guaranteed
Compliance is one of our core promises. We check carrier requirements, destination restrictions, and paperwork completeness before your parcel leaves Winnersh. That is part of what Efficiency in Motion means in practice: fewer surprises, clearer routes, and shipments that move because they are ready to move.
